Maintaining over a thousand friendships is humanly impossible, or it would require a fulltime job. Facebook does much of this work for you: by allowing you to disseminate messages to hundreds of friends without conciously addressing any of them. By reminding you of their existence through birthday alerts, or simply by showing them in your list of "friends". Inter-Face ensures only the people you meaningfully interact with on your own initiative remain in your Facebook network. This leads to a qualitative social network, not a quantitative one.
